We’re collecting #herbarium voucher specimens with @EmoryHerbarium Collections Manager Dr. Samarakoon & @GCAScholarships Zeller Scholar in Medicinal Botany - Kat Bagger. Here I describe why these specimens are important for #drugdiscovery & #conservation.
Prunus angustifolia, Rosaceae aka Chickasaw plum! This fabulous species was used by native people of the SE USA as both a food & medicine. The fruits are tart & slightly sweet when mature 😋

Medicinal uses of the eastern mayhaw: Crataegus aestivalis is a type of hawthorn of the rose family (Rosaceae). Its spiny thorns had an interesting application in Native American medicine - check it out #medicinalplants #botany #expeditionichauway #iamabotanist
Pressing our 47th specimen! These wet bandannas are a wonder for keeping the gnats out of our noses and mouths😁#fieldwork #expeditionichauway #iamabotanist #herbarium #georgia
The most dedicated note taker on the #expeditionichauway crew 😃. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to expose my kids to #fieldwork & time outdoors in different types of ecosystems. Creativity needs to be nourished & that is what we’re doing on this trip! #phdmom #drmom #botany
Another glorious morning in the woods. We’re…
To keep this hungry #fieldwork crew fed on #ExpeditionIchauway - we’re supplementing our groceries with some delicious wild foraged foods 😋 #wildfood #chanterelle #fungi #mushrooms #forage
The #planthunters return! Success in finding some large Morning glory (Ipomoea tubers) as day 3 of #ExpeditionIchauway comes to an end. #QuaveLab
Happy Father’s Day Marco! He’s spending it during #fieldwork teaching his daughter a bit of carpentry as they build a plant drier. #FathersDayWeekend #skillbuilding
#fieldwork with kids :) Training the next generation of scientists in #QuaveLab ! #phdmom #drmom #ExpeditionIchauway
My “desk” on this buggy muggy morning 😁 #ExpeditionIchauway @EmoryHerbarium #botany #fieldwork
Day 2 of #ExpeditionIchauway tally: 2 bee stings, 3 blisters, innumerable quantity of gnats involuntarily eaten, 1 tantrum from the youngest crew member (5 y.o.) who'd had enough with the gnats, collected 8 species, filled 1 plant drier & made this PI happy & exhausted! #QuaveLab
“It smells like root beer!” That’s because this is the plant source of the original root beer! Sassafras albidium. We’ve collected enough samples for our research & maybe just a bit more to brew up our own batch of natural fermented root beer! Stay tuned....
These #QuaveLab students are strong! Digging & sawing to pull out this stubborn Sassafras albidum sample for analysis! Sassafras has been used by many tribal nations as a medicine for everything from bee stings to wounds, cuts & bruises! It’s also a #wildfood! #ExpeditionIchauway
Beautiful wild blackberries everywhere here! I…
Yucca filamentosa in the Asparagaceae family has a long history of medicinal use by native people of the Americas. We’re most interested in the roots, which were used by the Catawba as a decoction for skin disease & the Cherokee as a salve for sores. #ExpeditionIchauway #QuaveLab
Plant collecting isn’t always easy! Marco had to put some muscle into collecting these roots from Yucca filamentosa on #ExpeditionIchauway

#ExpeditionIchauway day 2 begins!
We’re having fun trying out the new gear and assembling our work kits for tomorrow! #ExpeditionIchauway is off to a good start with some awesome #teamwork and laughter :) #QuaveLab @EmoryHerbarium
Day 1- We’ve arrived! #ExpeditionIchauway begins... now to the busy work of unloading and assembling our equipment! #QuaveLab #Emory #planthunter
And that's a wrap! We had a great time filming today! My kids are stoked to have been included too :) This small piece will air on a new program called "Life" later this year on the network RTL Germany. #womeninscience #scicomm #phdlife #phdmom #emory #ethnobotany
Congratulations to @emorycshh Asst. Prof Cassandra Quave for earning the 2018 @EmoryAdmission Faculty Appreciation Award! @QuaveEthnobot #Emory #QuaveLab

"Botany,—the science of the vegetable kingdom, is one of the most attractive, most useful, and most extensive departments of human knowledge. It is, above every other, the science of beauty."
~Sir Joseph Paxton, 'Peter Parley's Cyclopedia of Botany' (1838)
To celebrate Peter Raven's admirable efforts to save the world, we'll be presenting the renowned botanist with the Hubbard medal, National Geographic's highest honor, at the National Geographic Awards tomorrow. Details: https://t.co/goErzqfPzW #NatGeoFest
My hubby & kiddos finished building 2 new plant driers for #ExpeditionIchauway ! I asked him to make them big & he delivered! We have a #QuaveLab tradition to name them. Any ideas? We were thinking Hercules and Goliath - but share options in comments if u have some!
Countdown to #ExpeditionIchauway ! Just 2 more days! We’ve sprayed our field clothes with permethrin to help ward off biting insects. Tomorrow will be a busy day in #QuaveLab for final gear prep.
I got a new plaque! Thanks @emorycollege for this sweet recognition for support of the Office of Admissions! Totally unexpected & appreciated! 😁
