Farewell party for Sofia - a NY high school student that worked in #QuaveLab this summer. She said her biggest takeaway from the experience was 1) great sense of community in the lab (thought science as more of a solo endeavor before) & 2) discovery of how much she loved science!
.@jesswade inspired me to join the Wiki-editing action to make the Internet less sexist, one @Wikipedia page at a time
So it was a total blast getting to write this @nature piece with her on why we’re making pages for #WomenInSTEM—and why you should too!
Why we’re editing women scientists onto Wikipedia
And here's why you should, too, say Jess Wade and Maryam Zaringhalam.
Story behind the struggle for #vanilla growers of #Madagascar
Also - DYK that <1% of vanilla flavor comes from real vanilla? Most flavoring (vanillin) is synthetic & made from petrochemicals! Vanilla is the pod of an orchid originally from Mexico. #botany

Pakistan is on Level 2 Alert (2nd highest) because 2000 people have in the last few months contracted new strain of Salmonella that causes nearly fully #antibiotic resistant Typhoid Fever. Mortality rate as high as 30%.
Love stumbling across old letters and drawings with #herbarium specimens. Always reminds me of the rich context behind each collection, and makes me realize just how much culture is stored alongside all the science!
I had a great time chatting w/ #bushcraft expert @PKirt about #medicinalplants & #ethnobotany- the science of #survival! Free podcast streaming here & on iTunes: Podcast: Dr Quave On Studying Medicinal Uses Of Plants & The Treatment Of Infectious Disease
Ethnobotanists like @QuaveEthnobot are scouring the world for plants used as folk remedies to turn into drugs – but it's harder than movies like Medicine Man make it look!
From folklore to pharmacy
Although many drugs have in the past come from plants, Hayley Bennett discovers that it's hard work getting them approved today
Many drugs have come from plants- but getting them approved & to market is not an easy task. @gingerbreadlady explores some botanical drug successes & discusses future projects with #QuaveLab & others: "From folklore to pharmacy" #pharmacognosy #botany
Quick point to make out: If you are looking at rotating in a lab this upcoming academic year there are important points about how to be successful in learning bout lab culture and fit for you. #gradschool

Fantastic! Indigenous knowledge of crops - & biodiversity of crops - is so key to #foodsecurity! I'm also really heartened to see that plans for access & benefit sharing are in place in accordance with #Nagoya protocol. #TraditionalKnowledge #NativeMaize #Botany #LessFertilizer
An indigenous Mexican variety of corn gets its own fertilizer from the air thanks to... bacteria in its mucus-covered aerial roots. If the ability can be bred into conventional corn, it could be huge win for agriculture. https://t.co/dbCar55lHD

When opportunity knocks... #QuaveLab & @EmoryHerbarium team members found this Celtis tree down on #Emory bridge this morning. Now they’re hurrying to clip samples before it’s removed. The fruits have a long history as a Native food & the bark was used for venereal disease.
Plants literally rule the world in terms of biomass. Many of our foods, medicines, textiles, tools come from plants. Yet, the study of plants has declined across K-12 & college curricula! Let's #BringBackBotany education! Our planet's health depends on it!
Plants Are the World's Dominant Life-Form
Flora make up the majority of Earth’s biomass, followed by bacteria
