"Is email making professors stupid?" My answer is YES! This weekend I read my old handwritten journals from my time in the Amazon. I was shocked by how deep & introspective my 21-yr-old self was. I no longer have time to think deeply & w/ reflection. https://t.co/IRx0u5cROC

Opuntia ficus-indica, CACTACEAE The prickly pear or Indian fig continues to fascinate me - so many uses! In #Pantelleria #Sicily, flowers are collected & dried, then used when needed to treat urinary tract infections. Locals report that it exhibits diuretic effects. #planthunter

In areas of the #Amazon where seasonal flooding occurs, homes are built as open platforms on stilts. Every part of the home, from the stilts, floor & roof, is sourced from local wild plants. #Palms especially play an important role as construction materials. #ethnobotany

The flooded forests of the #Amazon are known as the "varzea". The flooding phenomenon is seasonal & replenishes the soil nutrients in the region. It also serves as a breeding ground for fish, reptiles, mammals & birds. The pink river dolphin can be found here too! #biodiversity
