    Isn’t this the most beautiful staghorn fern you’ve ever seen?! It started off as a small gift - about a foot large - from my paternal grandmother to my mom back in the early 1970s.  Fifty years later, it hangs from thick coils of chains in the boughs of a sturdy oak tree. I can’t imagine how much it weighs now!

    We came across large blankets of deer moss coverin We came across large blankets of deer moss covering the ground under the the shade of oaks and sand pines. Deer moss (Cladonia spp.) is not actually a moss, but rather a lichen! As a lichen, it lacks roots and represents a mutualistic relationship between a fungus and blue-green algae. It grows in clusters on sandy soil in scrubby flatwoods here in Florida.

Locally known as Florida rosemary or sandhill rosemary, this isn’t rosemary at all! It belongs to the Ericaceae family and is not edible. It lacks the characteristic aroma of the Lamiaceae family. Still a pretty plant to come upon on a hike through a maritime hammock 😁
