With 500,000 higher plants in the world’s flora, not including as many less well-known lower plants (the fungi and algae), there exists an incredibly unexplored frontier of new chemical compounds. It has been estimated that of the 80,000 species of higher plants in the Amazon valley, fewer than 1 percent of the plants have been even superficially analyzed for their chemical constituents.
