Psoralen - a naturally-occurring compound in fig leaves, celery, & parsley (among others) - is a flat molecule capable of squeezing into the DNA double helix and impeding DNA replication. It appears to be responsible for fig leaf photodermatitis. #PhytochemicalFriday (the 13th)!

Rose galls have an interesting history of use in traditional medicine and are packed with astringent phytochemIcals like tannins.
Words of the Day: “Puck’s Pincushion” — folkname for the rose gall (aka Robin’s Pincushion, Devil’s Pincushion, moss gall, bedeguar gall), caused by the gall wasp Diplolepis rosae; esp. visible in September on field & dog roses.
Part of the chemical basis for the earthy smell following rain: geosmin - a terpenoid compound produced by some bacteria but also by beets (Beta vulgaris) as part of their signature earthy flavor. Thanks @mishaploid for another awesome #PhytochemicalFriday suggestion!

How do people learn to cook a toxic plant safely?
Cassava is very dangerous if not prepared properly, so how did people develop and share that knowledge?
Just finished listening to a super interesting episode on Labrador tea (Rhododendron tomentosum; formerly Ledum palustre). In episode 19 of her #Foodiepharmacology podcast @QuaveEthnobot interviews @Chef_Sean I’ve learnt a lot from this episode!
