Dr. Quave has received a grant in the amount of $30,000 from the Emory University Research Committee to support her fieldwork this summer in Sicily on the project: “Investigation into the antibacterial potential of medicinal plants of the Aegadian Islands, Italy“. Working with collaborators at the University of Palermo and local community leaders, Quave and team will undertake an ethnobotanical survey of wild medicinal plants in use (current and past) in the Aegadian Islands, a small volcanic chain of islands situated west of Trapani. Back in the lab at Emory, Quave’s research team will examine the chemical makeup of collected plants and fungi, and examine their potential for activity against multidrug-resistant pathogens such as MRSA, CRE and other ‘ESKAPE’ bacteria, which are a top priority based on need for drug development.
