Panel Discussion: Eastern and Western Medicine
Interest in the role of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Use in the U.S. has grown rapidly in recent years. CAM is often used in conjunction with biomedicine, and encompasses a spectrum of therapies, including: meditation, herbal medicine, religiosity, and integrative pain management. In conjunction with distinguished Emory faculty and healthcare professionals, come join us in a panel discussion on compassion, alternative medicine, and the integration of these practices into health care. The discussion is free and open to the public but registration is required. The program begins with a discussion by our panelists on CAM use in the U.S. from 12:15-1:15pm. It will be followed by a Q&A session from 1:15-2:15pm.
Our panelists include:
- Arri Eisen, PhD, Professor of Pedagogy at Emory (Biology, ILA, & Center for Ethics)
- Geshe Lobsang Tenzin Negi, PhD, CBCT Developer, Co-Founder/Director of the Emory-Tibet Partnership, and Professor of Practice in the Religion Department at Emory
- Yoon Hang John Kim, MD, PhD, Director at Georgia Integrative Medicine
- Cassandra Quave, PhD, Assistant Professor at Emory (Dermatology & Human Health)
Panelists will discuss the rise in CAM use in the U.S. in recent years, how their respective research and/or healthcare practices are helping promote CAM, and their respective academic/professional journeys into the realm of CAM.

Free lunch will be provided by Saba and Messi’s Cafe and Lounge, an Ethiopian restaurant. Saba will be serving salad, penne chicken alfredo, vegetarian spaghetti with marinara, and bread. Messi’s will be providing lentil samosas and roasted barley appetizers.
