Why do we have a sweet tooth? 🍎 In the new episod Why do we have a sweet tooth? 🍎

In the new episode of Foodie Pharmacology, I talk with nutrition scientist Dr. Jennie Brand-Miller about how fruit and sugar may have helped fuel the evolution of the human brain.

We also unpack the glycemic index and some surprising food comparisons: Why can a potato raise blood glucose more quickly than an apple? Does brown rice always beat white rice? And where does pasta fit?

How should we measure the value of a farm? Yield How should we measure the value of a farm?

Yield is easy to count. The knowledge required to manage diverse crops, the work that sustains a farming household, and a community’s ability to keep farming are harder to capture.

In the new episode of Foodie Pharmacology, I speak with Purdue anthropologist Dr. Andrew Flachs @DrFlachsophone about his book "Feeding the World as if People Mattered: How Small Farms Produce Value Beyond Yields". Drawing on research in India, Bosnia, and the U.S., we discuss what conventional measures of productivity leave out—and why producing more calories alone does not solve hunger.

I’d welcome your thoughts: What else should we measure when evaluating a food system?

DYK that some of the foundations for lifelong heal DYK that some of the foundations for lifelong health are established before a child’s second birthday?

During the first 1,000 days of life, a baby’s gut microbiome changes at remarkable speed—shaped by birth, feeding, antibiotics, food, caregivers, and the surrounding environment.

In the newest episode of Foodie Pharmacology, I speak with gastroenterologist and microbiome specialist Dr. Savita Srivastava about what science can (and can’t yet) tell us about this critical period.

Most importantly, this isn’t a story about achieving a “perfect” microbiome. Parents have many opportunities to support their children’s health as they grow.
