Cheap food isn’t cheap. 🥬💸 This week on Foodie P Cheap food isn’t cheap. 🥬💸

This week on Foodie Pharmacology, Dr. Cassandra Quave talks with Kristine Root of Socha about her report The End of Cheap Food. They cover how we built a system that externalizes costs into our health, our soil, and our farmers, and what marketing can do to make better food visible and meaningful. Plus: why beans might be the next big marketing hero. 🫘

Hello from the beautiful KwaZulu-Natal province of Hello from the beautiful KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa! I’m delighted to be in Durban this week with my colleagues Dr. Godwin Anwar of Uganda and Dr. Fabien Schultz of Germany and many others at the 3rd International Congress of the African Phytomedicine Scientific Society (APSS 2026)! Tomorrow we kick off the meeting and I’ll be delivering a keynote lecture on the exciting research underway in my lab at @emoryuniversity 💚 Many thanks to Prof. Namrita Lall of U. Pretoria for organizing such a great lineup! #medicinalplants #pharmacology #pharmacognosy #SouthAfrica #ethnobotany

Can bacteria be bred to feed crops? 🌱 Synthetic n Can bacteria be bred to feed crops? 🌱

Synthetic nitrogen fertilizer feeds our crops, but it also pollutes waterways and drives greenhouse gas emissions. Dr. Hungria, a soil microbiologist at Embrapa and winner of the 2025 World Food Prize, has spent her career selecting and breeding bacteria that give plants their nitrogen naturally. She tells Dr. Quave how it works, why it’s cheaper for farmers, and how it can restore degraded land.

Dr. Hungria’s team selected and bred bacteria for soybeans, and applying fresh inoculant at the seed each year has produced about 10% more grain yield across more than 400 field trials. She also covers restoring degraded pastures, drought-tolerant microbes, and why these tools are ready to scale now.

Dr. Rachel Washburn, director of the @WashburnCHAOSLab (Complex Host and Abiotic Systems), is building a predictive map. She links microbial communities, mineralogy, water chemistry, and metabolomics across Kentucky’s caves.

This week on Foodie Pharmacology, I’m heading underground with Dr. Rachel Washburn (@WashburnCHAOSLab), a biomedical geoscientist who studies caves as living chemistry labs. Her team looks at the microbes, the minerals, and the molecules all at once, and she explains it with a heavy metal concert analogy.

We talk about:
🪨 Why show caves with permanent lighting may be surprisingly interesting for natural products
💧 How a Kentucky cave that was once a sewer is recovering
🗺️ Her plan to build a “treasure map” to guide drug discovery
🔬 How anyone can join her citizen science fieldwork
